Ice-breaking vessels can get you up to 81° north, unlocking a world of icebergs, arctic wildlife and untouched wilderness along the way. Once you are there, provided the conditions are favourable, with visibility to watch out for bears, you can find yourself enjoying a BBQ dinner on the ice. The vessels we work with have about 10-12 cabins, full crew, expedition team and some with a spa and therapist. The wildlife and dramatic landscape is really what you’d make this trip for. Svalbard is an ideal place from which to embark and probably 7 or 8 nights would be enough for a lifetime experience. On occasion, we have asked an expert scientist to join the team for hands-on recording of whales, as well as fascinating lectures. You should see polar bears, walruses, seals and hopefully arctic foxes and whales. The ships all come with zodiacs (and riffles!) to get to where these locals hang out, as well as to some of the most beautiful hiking places.

If you’re not a fan of the cold, a warmer option would be to charter a superyacht, or indeed a native, traditional boat. Some stunning journeys are those through archipelagos, such as you find in Indonesia and Croatia, for example. This is a glorious way to travel, at the same time as being immersed in breathtaking scenery and the authentic island spirit. Raja Ampat, in Indonesia, the world’s most stunning marine region in the world, with extraordinary biodiversity, is heaven for snorkellers and divers. There are several places in this region where it makes little difference to what can be experienced if you prefer to snorkel rather than dive, but it’s always important to have a true expert along for the ride … then you’ll likely see turtles galore and hopefully some manta rays!

If a living on a boat for a while is not for you, then perhaps a private island is. We love to work with regenerative resorts and island owners, who not only sustain, but actively improve the environment. One of our favourites is in Palawan, Philippines, unspoiled and undeveloped. There are 125 acres of tropical paradise to enjoy, a 600m long white sand beach and a private reef. Crewed boats are at your beck and call and every water sport you can think of can be enjoyed here, as well as fishing, snorkelling and diving with your very own PADI instructor, if required.
